April Fools & Spring is in the air

So it's all go this Spring, and I started April off with a cheeky little April Fools - SPROCKETS (AI Advertising) - an idea from a friend in the US and played out on a few advertising community, blogs and newsgroups to delicious effect. Well done to those who saw through it. The scary thing is that in 5 years time it will probably all be real. That's technology for you. Been updating slowly each group on MediaStarz, I don't want to bombard you all with groups to join out of the blue otherwise.… Continue

Planted on Networks, Phony Download Infects 500K PCs

Almost 500,000 people have unintentionally downloaded an adware bundle from file-sharing networks in the past week, security firm McAfee says, with ugly consequences. Disguised as a music file or popular movies, the phony file is circulating on the eDonkey and Limewire networks. It asks users to install a codec to play the file, and then overwhelms them with popup ads, the BBC reports.

Facebook Sets Safeguards Against Sexual Predators

Facebook has implemented more than 40 additional measures to protect users from pedophiles and online bullying, the AP reports. The site now limits results for older users searching for minors, and has banned sex offenders from registering. "Building a safe and trusted online experience has been part of Facebook from its outset," said the site’s chief privacy officer.

MySpace Web's 'Biggest Steal'

MySpace fell short of revenue targets in the most recent quarter, but, Adam Ostrow argues in Mashable, it’s still proven a phenomenal deal since Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. bought it for $580 million in 2005. Revenues from its unit are pulling close to its purchase price and it’s on track to make more with music downloads, sponsorships and targeted ads.

Subnotebooks Don't Quite Measure Up

Hamstrung by poor battery life, and burdened with an overly weighty Vista operating system that makes starting up a drag, a pair of new subnotebook computers offer a glimpse of what could be—but isn’t quite, writes Wall Street Journal tech guru Walt Mossberg. Lenovo’s IdeaPad—a junior ThinkPad—and the U2E, a quirky offering from Asus, are pricey to boot.

China Won't Stop Censoring Web for Olympics

China apparently will continue to censor the Internet during August's Olympics, but says the international press will have the access it needs to function, Jacqui Cheng writes on Ars Technica. Officials said they would guarantee as much access “as possible,” but “controls on some unhealthy websites” would continue. In defense, they said, “every country limits access to some websites.”

Soured on Yahoo, Microsoft Made Pass at Facebook

As its talks with Yahoo began to break down, Microsoft turned its attentions to Facebook as its possible Internet portal solution, reports the Wall Street Journal. Microsoft already has a $240-million stake in the $15-billion company, but it's uncertain if Facebook would consider a full acquisition. The Journal's source says there are no active discussions ongoing.

Facing Suit, FBI Drops Secret Order

Facing a lawsuit, the FBI has withdrawn a secret order demanding that an Internet library turn over a user's records—only the third time the bureau has backed down from such a demand, known as a "national security letter." The San Francisco-based Internet Archive, which stores old versions of websites, challenged the order on the grounds that the Patriot Act provision that protects libraries from similar requests should apply online as well.

Papa John's Hits $1B in Online Pizza Sales

Papa John's passed the $1-billion mark in online pizza orders yesterday, trumpeting growth in Internet sales averaging 50% per year since it debuted the service in 2001. Domino’s and Pizza Hut join the third-place pizza-delivery chain in reporting that the Internet is giving the business new life and increasing their slice of the casual dining pie, reports the AP. Pizza Hut says its online orders have grown sixfold in the last 3 years, and Domino's says its tracking system has given the company a "big bump."

Venture Capitalists See the Eco-Friendly Light

Venture capitalists are swarming around firms developing LED (light-emitting diode) and similar lighting technologies beyond their current applications in calculators and cell phones, the San Jose Mercury News reports. Investors see new sources, using one-sixth of the power of incandescent bulbs, as environmentally friendly replacements for indoor and outdoor lighting.

snes.jpg You've got to have a kind of grudging respect for the people who birth such creations as a fully functioning NES controller coffee table from their loins. Imagine the time spent, the questions fielded, the dedication that must have gone into it. And what does he have to show for it?

Google's recycled wireless computer mice - not only are they red and blue, they're green too

google1.jpg Google seem to have their fingers in all the pies don't they? And now it seems they're having a bash at computer accessories as well. Firstly their mice are recycled, so Google are going to rake up some green points on that. Secondly, they're wireless, so they also feature cutting-edge technology.
