Advertising & Media Community - Sharing Information - Creating Friends

Mar 27, GOOGLE announced that it will give up control of the OpenSocial application platform and establish a non-profit foundation to oversee the venture. Yahoo and MySpace have committed to joining the new entity, ensuring a large user base. OpenSocial was created as Google's response to the Facebook application platform. It allows developers to create one application that can be deployed across all member networks with little or no additional coding. Facebook has not joined and will continue to focus on its own closed application platform.

Google changes rules of search game

LONDON - Google has scrapped advertisers' exclusive right to bid on key words for their own brands, opening up opportunities for rivals to "piggy-back" on competitors' search volumes.- FULL STORY HERE

From 5 May, any advertiser or agency will be able to bid on trademarked single words in the UK and Ireland. Previously, companies could ask Google to protect their single word trademarks from rival bids. It is unclear how many companies in the UK and Ireland asked Google to do this.

The change is associated only to single-word searches and will impact only sponsored links, not natural search. Multiple-word searches have always been subject to open bidding.

In a memo to agencies, Google sought to reassure trademark owners by claiming they are likely to retain an advantage over competitors, as they can embed their trademark terms in their ads, leading to a higher position in Google's sponsored links.

Mar 28, GOOGLE is seeing continued decline in clicks on search advertisements, according to new data from comScore. During February, Google saw ad clicks fall 3% from January's totals. That marks two consecutive months of decline. Google maintains that clicks aren't the sole indicator of business success but Wall Street isn't buying it. The company's stock has fallen 40% since November. I've got a different question. How accurate are ComScore's numbers and are they third party verified?

EU takes web search groups to task:

Google, Microsoft and other online search companies could be forced to tighten further their privacy controls after an influential European Union privacy group found that existing safeguards did not sufficiently protect users’ personal information.

An opinion published by the Article 29 Working Party, a group of national officials who advise the EU on privacy issues, found that search companies “have so far insufficiently explained the nature and purpose of their [data collection] operations to the users of their services”.
