Advertising & Media Community - Sharing Information - Creating Friends

JonClarke

Marketing/advertising across social networks/blogs/widgetsphere - See further separate posts for the external meetings that have taken place since

As brought up by Ivan from Snipperoo.com on Chinwags's UK-Netmarketing email forum. A continuous thread to discuss the issues of marketing and advertising across and within social networks, blogs, widgetsphere, etc.

I thought it might be easier to have a virtual lounge to discuss the topic so here it is. I for one have conducted advertising on blogs for a major electrical goods client and found those sites to be far superior to the normal ones you would find on a media plan. Plus, it isn't at all straight forward and each social community and indeed areas within them need to be treated differently.

Anyway let the discussion kick-off. How about introducing yourselves first, your reason for being here, and whether you have experience to share or looking to learn.

Thanks, Jon

Hi all

I will endeavour to make the next meeting but wanted to let you know that the Group I've mentioned is now established. So we now have - for the first time - a body for professional government webbies. This includes local and central government.

What I'd like to do is get a marketing sub-group going and then work with you guys to do a joint event. Are people interested in something like this?

Hi All
Just adding my write up for last weeks M-idgets meeting which was enhanced by Jim Haysom's Ministry of Sound widget discussion. Jim's widget is a music player with various channels streaming down music from the MOS brand (http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=5ccfbc41-0881-4f30-b...). Its free, and basically a brand awareness exercise in phase 1. In phase 2, there are big plans; music downloads seemed to ring a bell with the group, but it was the clear success of the widget in reaching audiences as far afield as Aus and distributing the MOS brand that really made sense. One negative is that its only on Vista but extensive research showed that most of the audience would be Vista users.
Everyone agreed that what we know as the browser won't exist in one way or another. Whether we have desktop widgets with thier own connections, or a browser open as part of our OS, we know that widgets will form the basis of whats there. You'll have your WIkipedia, Ebay, Amazon, etc widgets, the banks will send your statement straight to your desktop (any contacts at the banks anyone!) and you'll have your news, sport and current affairs dealt with by the BBC or Sky.
WIth Open Social hitting the streets, its going to be interesting to see if it really will allow you to develop over all the social networks or whether its just Google's attempt at cornering the market...
Paypal have already got thier OpenSocial tool out... https://www.paypal.com/

This was a good piece in BrandRepublic today about how advertisers are looking at and using widget applications (apps) to virally get their message and branding out via social networking and blog sites - Click Here

And on the back of that piece is the news on how Facebook is allowing members to opt out of their Social Ads - so more power to the widgetmaker...
